Cradle of the Revolution
When Fidel Castro and Che Guevara set the wheels of the Cuban Revolution in motion, they not only changed their own destinies but also created an extraordinary country which has retained the power to fascinate to this day. This unique group tour will take you to the heart of Cuba’s history as you retrace the footsteps of those passionate revolutionaries 50 years ago. Holguin, Bayamo, Santiago de Cuba, the Moncada Barracks and Baracoa all feature on this journey back through time – as well as plenty of Cuba’s outstandingly beautiful natural features, including beaches, mountains, rivers and game reserves.
All trips can be tailor-made. For a quotation or for more information Call 0845 277 3305 or Email cubadept@regent-holidays.co.uk
DAY 1: Arrival into Holguin Arrive in Holguin and transfer to the 4-star Occidental Grand Playa Turquesa Hotel. Spend the rest of the day exploring the beautiful beaches and surrounding local area or simply take in the sun by the hotel pool.
DAY 2: Holguin, Bayamo and Santiago de Cuba A short tour of Holguin’s peaceful, tree-lined squares will make it quite clear why this is known as the City of Parks. Then it’s on to Bayamo, the former capital of Cuba where, in 1868, the National Anthem was sung for the first time.
An afternoon tour of this beautiful colonial city will include a visit to the 16th century church of San Salvador, now a national monument. Then your journey continues, skirting the Sierra Maestra Mountains, to Santiago de Cuba. This lovely city is known as the Cradle of the Revolution. It was here that Castro motivated his early supporters. Dinner and overnight at the Hotel Casagranda.
DAY 3: Santiago de Cuba, Castillo del Morro and El Cobre Santiago de Cuba is the island’s second city and there’s plenty to see. Starting with the Parque Cespedes, you’ll experience the Latin vibrance of the Calle Heredia, visit the former Bacardi Rum factory and Padre Pico Street, where locals still congregate to play draughts. Take in the panoramic mountain and coastal views from the historic Castillo del Morro and then enjoy lunch at a traditional restaurant nearby. In the afternoon you can appreciate the elegant symmetry of El Cobre Church, Cuba’s most sacred pilgrimage site. After dinner there is an optional visit to a Casa de la Trova for an unmissable first-hand experience of live Cuban music.
DAY 4: Moncada Barracks and Guantanamo Leaving Santiago de Cuba, your journey brings you to the Moncada Barracks, where you can still see the bullet holes left by Castro’s failed attack in 1953. At Guantanamo history is being played out before your eyes, as you look down on the US base from the Malones observation point. A spectacular drive along the ravishing south-eastern coastline carries you past palm-fringed bays, sleepy towns and towering mountains until you reach the pretty seafront town of Baracoa, where you will spend the night at the Hotel El Castillo.
DAY 5: Finca Duaba and the Rio Toa The Finca Duaba is a traditional Cuban farm set in a lush, tropical landscape, where rural ways are passed down from generation to generation. After a tour of the farm, your next destination is a UNESCO protected reserve on the Rio Toa, Cuba’s widest river. On a short boat ride up river towards lunch, you’ll pass through tropical rainforest, alive with birds, butterflies and other indigenous wildlife. Overnight in Baracoa. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Baracoa.
DAY 6: Maguana Beach, Cayo Saetia and Home Taking the coastal road towards Holguin, you’ll stop at the beautiful Maguana Beach for a stroll or a swim. Then on to the paradise islet of Cayo Saetia, Cuba’s premier game reserve, where a jeep safari will let you glimpse antelope, deer, wild boar, and buffalo. White sandy beaches and lunch by the sea will make it hard to tear yourself away. Finally you return to Holguin, for your homeward bound flight.
