The idea of driving in Cuba brings to mind images of the magnificient 1950's classic Chevrolet and Oldsmobile cars that are still a common place on the streets of Havana and many of the smaller cities and towns in Cuba.

Cuba has a large number of minor roads allowing you to get off the beaten track and really enjoy the diversity of the island. Amongst the places to visit are the tobacco plantations and pin cushion mountains of Vinales Valley, Trinidad de Cuba - a World Heritage site, or on the way to Trinidad why not stop for awhile at the infamous Bay of Pigs, scene of the failed US baked invasion of Cuba.

There are a number of Car Hire companies who provide a range of modern vehicles. Car hire companies will accept UK driving licence but the drivers must be over the age of 21 years.

We would not recommend driving Late at night due to non-existent street or highway lighting, particularly in rural areas.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION:

1] Cuba is nearly 750 miles from end to end, with major cities well dispersed across the country. Driving can take a long time from city to city so you need to ensure you give yourself plenty of time.

2] Cars can be picked up in one city and dropped of in another, however please note that there will be a drop of charge - greater the distance from pick up the greater the drop off charge.

3] Insurance and a refundable deposit is payable locally: Insurance tends to be around $12 dollars per day.

4] Petrol in Cuba is relatively cheap: around $1 per litre.
