Santa Clara is the capital of the province Villa Clara. The region was famous for its sugar plantations and its eastern slopes are ideal for coffee growing. Santa Clara's modern history began when Batista's troops surrendered themselves to Che Guevara's men in 1958. This surrender was culmination of 400km march by Che and his comrades from the Sierra Maestra mountains near Santiago de Cuba.
There is a large mausoleum to Che Guevara and his comrades killed in Bolivia with an eternal flame.
