Santiago de Cuba is said to be the "Cradle of Revolution" but as the locals say, the baby always ends up in Havana. This reflects the fact that many of the Cuban revolutionaries, including Jose Marte and Fidel Castro, started off in Santiago de Cuba.
Santiago de Cuba is different from Havana due to influx of Haitian slaves who settled in the area during the 19th century.
Santiago de Cuba's history is very colourful and in the main square the house of the very first Governor of Cuba, Diego Velazquez can be found. Also the balcony from which Fidel Castro gave his first speech faces the main square.
